Jeffrey George Oakes, 60, of Oceanport, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on November 7, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jeff was born in Red Bank to Bernard and Elizabeth (Minaldi) Oakes, he grew up in Monmouth Beach and graduated Shore Regional in 1979.
Jeff was an avid member of the Monmouth Beach and Oceanport communities where he voluntarily coached baseball and played in the Oceanport men’s softball league. He also enjoyed spending time with his wife and children, usually outdoors camping, skiing, golfing, and gardening. He was known as a local fisherman and clammer who loved to be out on his boat. He was a union boilermaker at local #28 as well as a union member of local Electrical Union #98 working for PSE+G as a welder.
Jeff was a medical cannabis advocate who was named one of the top one hundred most politically influential voices in the New Jersey cannabis debate. His resilience and dedication was matched by his fearlessness in the halls of power demanding better access to medical cannabis for sick people.
He was predeceased by his parents Bernard G. Oakes and Elizabeth (Minaldi) Oakes, father in law Joesph B. Finn, brother-in-law, Timmy Finn, & niece Sara Finn.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Mary Finn Oakes, his children; Patrick, Liam and Maura, all of Oceanport, siblings, Mariann Incardone (Daniel) of Middletown, Nancy Oakes of Shrewsbury and Gregory Oakes of Toms River, sister-in-law, Elizabeth Dunzelman (Gary) of Monmouth Beach, brothers-in-law, John Finn (Connie) of SI, NY and Joseph Finn (Beth) of MA, many nieces, nephews, and one great-nephew.
